Standing Firm with Truth and Righteousness | Pastor Kevin Nderitu

Ephesians 6:13-14

“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place.”

Introduction

In our journey through Ephesians 6:10-20, we conclude our four-part series on Paul’s letter to the Church in Ephesus. This rich letter is filled with wisdom and exhortation to godly living. As Paul introduces the final section, he emphasizes the importance of standing firm against the devil’s schemes with the full armor of God.

Understanding the Schemes of the Devil.

Just as generals study their enemies, believers must recognize the strategies of the devil:

  1. Convincing You He’s Not Real: The devil seeks to make you believe that spiritual forces of evil are not real, diverting your attention to specific people or institutions as the root problems.
  2. Underestimating His Power: The devil wants you to think he’s weak, so you might rely on your own strength rather than God’s.
  3. Attacking Your Mind and Body: By sowing confusion, trouble, and chaos, the devil aims to shake your faith and bring doubt about God’s love and forgiveness.

The Armor of God

To combat these schemes, Paul instructs believers to put on the full armor of God. Before delving into the specifics of the armor, it is crucial to understand that our strength comes from the Lord. We must be strong in the Lord’s mighty power, as only His strength can help us stand firm against the enemy.

The Belt of Truth

The belt was the first piece of armor a soldier put on, signifying readiness and stability. In spiritual warfare, the first thing we need is truth:

  • God’s Revealed Truth: Truth is not subjective or based on personal beliefs but is revealed by God and remains constant and unchanging.
  • Jesus as Truth: Jesus declared, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). Knowing Jesus and His teachings helps us discern truth from lies.
  • The Holy Spirit’s Guidance: The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, guides us into all truth (John 16:13). Building a relationship with God and immersing ourselves in His Word helps us stand firm in truth.

The Breastplate of Righteousness

The breastplate protected vital organs, crucial for a soldier’s survival. Righteousness is equally crucial for spiritual survival:

  • Right Standing with God: Righteousness involves being and living right before God, reflecting His character through faith in Christ.
  • Transformative Power: Accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior transforms us, making us a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). We are called to live holy lives, rejecting sin and pursuing righteousness.
  • Defensive Against Accusations: The devil’s accusations can be countered with the truth of God’s righteousness. We stand firm, knowing there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).

Standing Firm

Paul repeatedly emphasizes standing firm, reflecting the idea of a siege where believers defend their position. Our spiritual warfare is ongoing, and the devil constantly seeks to disrupt our faith. However, by relying on God’s strength and wearing His armor, we can stand firm against all spiritual opposition.

Conclusion

As believers, our call is to be strong in the Lord and His mighty power. We must put on the full armor of God, starting with the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness. These foundational elements enable us to stand firm against the devil’s schemes, protect our hearts and minds, and live in a way that honors God. In doing so, we fulfill our mission and remain steadfast in our faith, regardless of the opposition we face.

Invitation

If you haven’t yet said yes to Jesus, consider this an invitation to experience the strength and protection that comes from a relationship with Him. For those who believe, remember that you stand firm not by your own strength but by the power of the Lord. Embrace the truth and righteousness provided by God and face each day with confidence, knowing that He equips you to stand firm.
