Is there a right way to pray? | Pastor Kevin Nderitu
Ephesians 6:18-24
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
21 Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing. 22 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you.
23 Peace to the brothers and sisters, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an 0undying love.
The Power of Prayer: Standing Firm in Faith
In our journey through life, prayer is a cornerstone that anchors us in our faith. As we conclude our five-part series titled “Standing Firm,” based on Ephesians 6:10-20, we delve into the essence of prayer and its significance in our spiritual walk. Today, we reflect on Paul’s words in Ephesians 6:18, which call us to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” Let’s explore what this means for us as believers.
The Essence of Prayer
Prayer is more than just a ritual; it is a profound way to communicate with God. It allows us to speak to Him, listen to Him, and align our desires with His will. Prayer is a means to praise God, confess our sins, and give thanks for His provisions. It is a vital part of our lives, shaping our relationship with God and transforming the way we live.
Personal Testimony: The Power of Persistent Prayer
Reflecting on my own life, I remember how my mother instilled the habit of prayer in us, even during the toughest times. After my father abandoned us, my mother would gather us to pray every night, despite her exhaustion. Through those prayers, I learned that our strength and provision come from God. It was her prayers that guided me into ministry and shaped my faith. [01:26]
Access to God Through Prayer
Through Christ’s sacrifice, we have direct access to God. We don’t need intermediaries; Jesus paid the price in full. Prayer nurtures our relationship with God, allowing us to understand His heart and receive His guidance. This relationship brings transformation, leading us to live godly lives that honor Him. [02:58]
The Transformative Power of Prayer
Prayer not only gives us access to God but also transforms our lives. As we pray, we receive instructions from God, and His Spirit shapes our thoughts and desires. This transformation leads us to live for God’s kingdom rather than our own dreams. A life that pleases the Lord is the epitome of success, as it is greatly rewarded by God. [04:13]
Praying in the Spirit
Paul emphasizes the importance of praying in the Spirit. This means allowing the Holy Spirit to inspire and shape our prayers. It’s not about eloquence but about surrendering to God’s will. Praying in the Spirit means seeking God’s will first and allowing His desires to shape our own. [08:25]
The Pattern of Prayer
Jesus provided a pattern of prayer in Matthew 6:9, starting with acknowledging God’s sovereignty. This sets the tone for our prayers, reminding us of the relational and reverent aspect of approaching God. We are called to submit to His will and seek His kingdom first. [09:41]
The Challenge of Unanswered Prayers
Many struggle with prayer due to unmet desires or perceived unanswered prayers. However, these seasons mature our faith, teaching us to align our requests with God’s will. Even when our prayers are not answered as we wish, we trust that God hears us and knows what is best. [12:47]
Praying for Others
Paul encourages us to pray for one another, maintaining unity in the body of Christ. Interceding for others strengthens our community and aligns us with God’s heart. How often do we pray for others? Imagine the impact if we committed to praying for each other regularly. [20:17]
Practical Steps to Enhance Your Prayer Life
- Practice Daily Prayers: Start your day with prayer and continue throughout the day. Use moments in your car or during breaks to talk to God. [21:42]
- Weeks of Prayer and Fasting: Engage in regular periods of prayer and fasting, both corporately and individually. This nurtures intimacy with God and strengthens our prayer habits. [23:04]
- Periodic Retreats: Take time to retreat and spend solitary moments with God. This helps us disconnect from the busyness of life and focus on our relationship with Him. [24:31]
Conclusion
We are called to live a life of prayer, guided by the Holy Spirit. By praying in the Spirit, we align ourselves with God’s will and receive His strength and guidance. Let us commit to deepening our prayer lives, seeking God’s will, and interceding for one another. As we do, we will experience the fullness of God and His immeasurable power at work within us.
May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better. Amen. [27:28]
God bless you.
