How can you resist the devil? | Pastor Kevin Nderitu

Ephesians 6:16-17

16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

In our faith journey, we are constantly engaged in a battle against the devil and his schemes. This battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil. As believers, we are equipped with the full armor of God to stand firm and resist these attacks. The Apostle Paul, in Ephesians 6, emphasizes the importance of the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. These elements are crucial for our spiritual growth and protection.

The shield of faith

is key for extinguishing the flaming arrows of the evil one. These arrows can take the form of worry, fear, distractions, negative self-talk, and doubts about God’s presence. Faith is not just about believing but also about applying the truth in our lives. It directs our focus from our abilities to the faithfulness of God, helping us to resist the devil’s attacks.

Community is also crucial in this battle. Just as soldiers join their shields to create a fortress, believers must come together to encourage and support one another. This collective faith creates a strong defense against the enemy’s attacks.

The helmet of salvation

protects our minds from the enemy’s attacks. Salvation has past, present, and future aspects. We are saved, being saved, and will be saved. The enemy often attacks our assurance of salvation, making us question our worthiness and leading to disillusionment. However, our salvation is secure in Christ, and we must focus on the future glory that awaits us.

Living for the ultimate, not the immediate, is another key strategy. The devil’s strategy is to make us live for immediate pleasures and forsake the ultimate glory that awaits us. True value in life is found in our eternal relationship with God, not in earthly pleasures. Following Jesus is about pursuing holiness and preparing for a glorious future in eternity with the Father.

The sword of the Spirit,

which is the word of God, is both a defensive and offensive weapon. Knowing and applying scripture effectively is crucial in resisting the devil. Jesus exemplified this during His temptation in the wilderness by quoting scripture to counter the devil’s temptations. We must invest in deep study, meditation, and memorization of scripture to wield this weapon effectively.

In this spiritual battle, the full armor of God is our greatest asset. The shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit are not just metaphors but practical tools for daily living. By focusing on God’s faithfulness, securing our minds with the assurance of salvation, and wielding the word of God effectively, we can stand firm against the devil’s schemes. Embrace these truths and stand firm in your faith, knowing that victory is assured in Christ.
